Michel you seem to cover two points here. One is the assumption that any
such market exchange will be a zero-sum game such as it is in times of
scarcity. I don't think that's so - non-zero sum economies based on
abundance are springing up, currencies that reward both the giver and the
recipient (give "5 stars" from unlimited pool, receive stars back for
participating). This changes the dynamic of adding value to receive value
although it in no way cancels it. If you look at the various hidden market
economies in peer to peer production - number of friends, Diggs, 5 star
ratings, Retweets - those mechanisms are already there and at play. in fact,
being gamed, which I think is one of your concerns?
Secondly, overall perceived value - not task for task based but more
amorphously built over time - is rewarded by higher value points. Consider a
mashup of "intangibles" (as in "amortization of intangibles") that build
value from long term engagement with the community such as brand value and
reputation. We value Tiffany necklaces - the markup is based on those
intangibles that CFOs love and is not tied as tightly to market behaviours.
Communities - including peer to peer production - are extremely hierarchical
and trade value points in finding, filtering and forwarding.

As for Linux communities - they are very "reputation equals value" based
rather than material analysis of actual work done, - they do not discount
donation for future gain. And currency - from my previous message - can be a
store of value. The tit for tat mechanism is there, but it may be delayed. I
do something good today, for future benefits. Reciprocity networks.  The
reward is also increased trust and reputation, -  PayItForward.

Therefore a participatory economy will probably play out as non-zero sum
(win win) with some limitations, a store of value (delayed rewards) but with
real time analysis. I'm just not sure whether there will be one currency or
many - recipients get points for work they've donated (e.g. metagov) and the
givers of those points get "giver karma" - leaderboards showing how much
they participated in rating the donated work. So companies donate today to
p2p Linux production to gain increased reputation and better pool of staff
in the future. A point system turns this value/quality into a numeric
quantity.

Any economy/currency is simply a measure of what we value - not being able
to show that we value a submitted work, devalues the donation, IMHO.
Even martyrs grow quickly bored of not being noticed for their
unnoticed/unthanked work, no?
