 Why should the artist be the one to

Perhaps only intentionality and vollition - nothing more.

This may be a reductive statement, but it may just boil down to that.  The intent of the work, and the volition of the artist to consider whether it's desirable for the work to be preserved at all.  Perhaps in earlier eras, the idea of preservation was more important/less questioned (The Archive), but it seems an option for the artist to be self-reflexive about the work's durability.  In the case of Gibson/Agrippa, its ephemerality is the interesting part.
