[iDC] The SL Unleashing.

Anytime you use a corporate medium to critique it, aren't you  
inherently advertising it? Anne-Marie Schleiner's "Velvet  
Strike" (guns that shot flowers and hearts vs bullets in Counter  
Strike) was a great virtual intervention to first person shooter  
games. It was subversive and ironic and just plain neato and  
ultimately, yeah, it made me want to go play the game. It upset a lot  
of CS players and created a lot of noise and although we didn't see  
the fall of the first person shooter I would still consider it  
successful. I think the SL sweatshop is similar in that it uses the  
medium to critique itself and presents the paradox – the seduction of  
the innovation, the wow factor, and on the flip side, the self- 
exploitation of the commodity exchange both literally (buying the  
jeans in rl) and metaphorically.

It's very interesting that there hasn't been any/much media buzz about  
SL employee burnout and labor injustices in contrast to other social  
networking media and popular virtual environments. As we heard at the  
conference WoW is plagued by inworld/real world racism among the gold  
farmers, critiquing the virtual grind of the mturk machine is loud and  
clear for both artists and activists and the utopian workplace of  
google is now getting slammed for not being so green after all. I can  
find lots of posts about the toils of online independent contractors,  
the mystery shoppers, quality raters, cha cha guides and of course the  
past miseries of the early dot.comers.

Soooo, I've been meaning to read Thomas Malaby's new book "Making  
Virtual Worlds: Linden Lab and Second Life". Maybe he's lurking out  
there and can chime in?
