Subject: Re: [iDC] Books/texts on democracy
For me, the most important and critical works on democracy are:
Macpherson, Crawford B. 1973. Democracy theory. Oxford: Clarendon Press.
Macpherson, Crawford B. 1965. The real world of democracy. Oxford:
Clarendon Press.
Pateman, Carole. 1970. Participation and democratic theory. Cambridge:
Cambridge University Press.
These works tend to show how liberal democracy is bound up with
capitalism and that we therefore need alternative notions and forms of
democracy. Personally I have found these approaches useful for analyzing
and criticizing notions such as eParticipation, digital democracy,
participatory web, new web, social web, web 2.0, etc (see for example
chapter 8 in my book "Internet and Society").
Best, Christian
