[iDC] It Doesn't Just Get Better, This Is Political

I agree with much of what Margaret states. However, Micha's citing of
Chomsky is key. Social institutions, like universities and schools, function
to embed and ratify social compacts. This is a process of normalisation.
Anything that doesn't fit within whatever has been deemed normal will be
marginalised. The question then is what that marginalisation implies? In
some societies this can mean exclusion from the basic necessities for life,
even state operated deletion (death). I don't live in the States but I don't
think it has got that bad there ... yet.

I grew up in Australia during the 50's and 60's so remember how deeply
conservative and mono-thematic society was. My memories of it seem
appropriately black and white. The late 60's and 70's were, as we know, a
period of radical change. Since then we have witnessed a fight-back by
social conservatives, ironically deploying weapons developed on the left.
The situation now is difficult. But I think my memory is well enough
preserved to feel secure in suggesting we live in a less mono-cultural
society than I grew up in and that some of the wars that were fought then
have delivered the basis for a new and better normality (eg: the casual
racism and sexism that was completely accepted when I was a kid would be
unthinkable now).

Nevertheless, Chomsky is right. Even if the new normal is "nicer" than the
old normal it is still normality - and that's where the problem begins.
Micha is right to identify that the system operates to ensure that people
who assume positions of power and responsibility are pre-normalised and he
is entirely correct to recognise the role of education in that process. The
general function of education is to normalise the population. It is only in
particular enclaves that alternate models of learning have established
themselves and they are not necessarily secure. I am acutely aware of how
the day to day processes of what in the UK is called "quality assurance"
(the continuous evaluation of students, staff and procedures) functions as
the de-personalised gatekeeper for access to the elite echelons of society
and thus power. The theorist de rigueur here is Foucault, not Chomsky. But I
think they'd agree on this.

The problems Micha identifies are, arguably, innate to socialisation. Our
society could potentially benefit from a little de-socialisation but in the
short-term this would lead to events few of us would wish to witness. Longer
term there would be no guarantee things would be better. Going by history
the odds are certainly less than 50/50. The question then is at what point
do you have nothing to lose? Different people will have different thresholds
for that test.
